Omena, Michigan celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 2002. The settlement had its beginnings in 1852. This historic community lies midway along Shown here as the lower body of water – Leelanau County’s west shore on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Omena is 25 miles north of Traverse City. Omena is a small town in sheltered Omena Bay. It is home to a small grocery store, Lavendar Lane on the Bay and a very cool art gallery. Boaters can dinghy into “Knot Just A Bar” which has great food, drink and atmosphere and the Leelanau Wine Cellars Tasting Room is adjacent to the restaurant. The bay is a great overnight anchorage with the right conditions - protected from north and mild south westerly winds. Stronger SW winds will create a bit of a harbor surge.
Worth mentioning is the small bay just to the north of Omena. Its hardly more than a “bump” on the chart but this little cove offers 10-15 feet of crystal clear water and a sandy bottom. Sorry, no restaurants or art galleries but a great spot to drop anchor.
