101 Basic Sailing

  • 2-Days – overnight stay on-board optional
  • ASA 101
  • A two-day course designed to give you the basic sailing experience. This ASA certification course will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to sail small fixed keel sailboat in light to moderate conditions. Sail theory, safety, tying knots and terminology are just part of what you will learn. The ASA certification test is taken at the end of the 2nd day. This course includes the ASA Sailing Fundamentals text book and ASA log book.  This course alone will not certify you to charter the boat you train on but will give you basic sailing experience. 
  • 9am-5pm, for a total of 14 hours of instruction.  Classes are held in Spring and Fall.  This course can be scheduled most anytime if you have 4 students or would like private instruction.  Call the office for details!

103 Basic Coastal Cruising

  • 2-Days, overnight stay on-board optional
  • ASA 103
  • For graduates of the 101 course or for those that have sailing experience and are willing to test into this course.  The 103 course spends more time focusing on developing the skills for independent, short range cruising.  More emphasis is put on docking and harbor handling, anchoring, heavy weather tactics, terminology and dives deeper into the topics covered in the 101.

Sailing Classes Action Shots1101 & 103 Basic Sailing & Coastal Cruising Combo Course

  • 4- Days live-aboard option – limited space, call office to reserve your space!
  • ASA 101/103
  • Our best selling course.  Taught on a 30’ cruising sailboat, this course is designed to give you confidence. You will learn everything mentioned in the above courses but in a consistent 4-day format.  Anchoring, expanded terminology, heavy weather tactics, harbor handling and docking, person-overboard recovery, general seamanship and weather is only part of the program. You will also be exposed to a wide variety of gear and hardware found on sail vessels designed for more than just day-sailing. Students are welcome to stay aboard each night at no additional cost but space is limited, stay aboards must be reserved!  At the end of each day around 5pm you will be back dockside in our marina and free to browse the beautiful town of Traverse City. Make it a learning vacation you will always remember. This course includes the ASA Sailing Fundamentals text book and ASA log book. Classes held every Saturday through Tuesday, 9am-5pm, mid May through September.

Women’s Only 101/103 Combo Course

  • The same as our standard 101/103 curriculum but is open only to women students.  The Women’s Only 101/103 may be taught by a male ASA instructor if a female instructor is not available.   Check back for specific dates that Capt. Jessica will be teaching this course.

Basic Sailing Learning Cruise

  • 3-Days live aboard cruise
  • After successful completion of the ASA 101/103, this popular option allows you to take the  boat you learned on (or similar model) for a 3-day cruising experience. Practice skills you just learned and harbor-hop on to Suttons Bay, Northport or Elk Rapids. Or anchor out at nearby Power Island Nature Preserve. The boat is yours and the destinations are many. Our boats have many live-aboard amenities such as propane stoves,  refrigeration, holding tank head and hot showers. The boat sleeps 5-6 so you can invite your family and friends along.
  • These prices are for the entire boat for 3 days – that’s not per person; that’s for your own private boat!
  • $795 for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday immediately following your 101/103 course or after Labor Day
  • $895 for any Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Memorial Day thru Labor Day if not immediately after your course

  • 3-Day Course  (101 & 103 prerequisite).  The 3 day course is for those that have completed 101 & 103 or for those with solid sailing experience and would like to move up to a larger vessel.
  • 7 Day Course (includes 101,103 & 104 – no prerequiste necessary).  The 7 day course is for those just starting out or for those who would like to fine tune their sailing skills. The 7 day course starts out with our standard 101/103 (see above) and finishes with 3 more days of bareboat certification on a larger boat.
  • This course covers cruise planning, mechanical andelectrical systems, advanced anchoring techniques, more in-depth navigation, heavy weather tactics as well as the live aboard experience. This is the course to prepare you for that bareboat charter in the Caribbean.
  • This course includes the ASA Bareboat Charter textbook and ASA log book. 3-Day 104 Course $695.00 per student or the 7-Day 101/103/104 Combo Course $1390 per student: discounts for groups of 4 or more and for private instruction.

Bareboat Learning Cruise

  • 2-4 Day live aboard cruise
  • Upon successful completion of 104 Bareboat Chartering, you will receive a special discounted rate to charter the boat you were trained on to practice your new skills. The Manitou Islands, Charlevoix and Petoskey are all within range. Enough room to invite the family.

  • 7-Day live aboard cruise
  • ASA 104/105
  • Combine 104 Bareboat Chartering (see above) withthe ASA 105 Coastal Navigation Home-Study course. We will mail you the ASA 105 Coastal Navigation textbook along withDVD to assist with the exercises. The home-study also includes a practice chart and support material to ensure you’re thoroughly prepared for the on-board test given on the 2nd day of the cruise course. The remaining 5 days will then be dedicated to the 104 Bareboat Chartering course and opportunities to practice your new navigation skills. Sure you will learn a lot but this learning vacation will also allow you to explore many islands, harbor towns, beaches and anchorages along the way. We can even put a kayak on board to give you the full experience. ASA 103 is a prerequisite.

105 Coastal Navigation Homestudy

  • A very comprehensive and indepth study of navigation designed to fit most skill levels from beginners to experienced navigators looking for a refresher. In fact, more than a few “old salts” commented on how much they didn’t know after taking this course! Running fixes, tide tables, dead reckoning and taking bearings are just part of it. You’ll receive the Coastal Navigation text book, book, CD guide, full size nautical chart and many study aids and practice worksheets.
  • Home Study Course – $179 includes Coastal Navigation text book and CD along with  with step-by-step instruction specifically designed for the homestudy course.  Additional $195 for ASA testing and certification, and allow at least a half day to test.

    • 2-Days live aboard cruise
    • ASA 114
    • If you are thinking about chartering a catamaran in the Caribbean, this is the course for you. Designed to bridge the gap and shorten the learning curve for monohull sailors, this course makes the transition to catamarans seamless. You will learn anchoring techniques, taking, jibing, catamaran sailing characteristics, design characteristics, person-overboard recovery, heavy weather tactics, twin-engine handling andmore. Taught on a world-class 40 foot Island Spirit, this course includes the ASA 114 textbook and necessary support materials. ASA 104 is a prerequisite. We also offer this as a non-ASA certified course for those looking for catamaran experience.

    Catamaran Learning Cruise

    • Upon successful completion of the ASA 114 course you can take the catamaran you trained on at a special discounted rate. This is the perfect yacht to explore the beautiful days that make up Northern Michigan. There’s room to invite your family and friends aboard this 3 cabin yacht.

    106 Advanced Coastal Cruising

    • 7-Days live aboard cruise
    • ASA 106
    • Hone all the skills learned in prior classes and add in new experiences including night navigation under sail, up to 100 mile non-stop passages, vessel systems troubleshooting, engineering and much more. Class is aboard a 35-45 foot cruising monohull and includes the 106 ASA textbook, parallel rules, dividers and support material. Our cruising catamaran can be used upon request for a surcharge.

    Coastal Navigation

    • A very comprehensive and indepth study of navigation designed to fit most skill levels from beginners to experienced navigators looking for a refresher.     Radar

    • This course is taught with software created by Starpath and following an ASA course curriculum using radar simulators, textbooks, handouts and support materials. We provide the radar software for students to use on their own laptops. Student software uninstalls after 30 days. A full, permament software version of the Radar Simulator is available for for students for an extra cost.
    • Classroom Course – $149 per student, add $99 and additional half day for ASA testing and certification.

    Weather - this course is also taught with software created by Starpath and follows an ASA curriculum using a powerpoint presentation, computer simulators, textbooks, handouts and support materials.

    GPS - this course starts in a classroom and then moves outside for land-based GPS exercisies. Students train on Garmin 72 handheld units. Approximately 6 hours of instruction plus support material. Offered in Spring and early summer.

    Workshop Extras

    ASA certification on Winter Workshop courses $99. Includes ASA test, up to 3 hours of testing time, ASA certification (when successfully completed) and ASA logbook.

    Navigation Tool Set $30. Includes parallel rules and dividers.
