Garden Island is an uninhabited 4990 acre island owned by the State of Michigan. There is a natural cove on the west end of the island that provides shelter and a small island in the middle. Excellent for exploring and swimming, Garden island is rich with history. A place of great spiritual significance to Native Americans of the Ojibwe and Ottawa tribes, more than 3500 buriels have taken place in an active Native American cemetary. Part of the Beaver Island archipelago, Garden Island once had a sawmill and a small town, (now a ghost town) is a great place to spend a day and evening. Caution should be exercised on approaching and departing the cove.
